What the Fig Food and Art in the village of Magaliesburg is a combined Mediterranean Restaurant, Art Gallery and working Creative Studio with a laid back and relaxed atmosphere.

GALLERY AND ART STUDIO

What the Fig is a working art studio and gallery, creating an all-round experience that combines alfresco dining, hand-crafted home-ware retail, and South African Art. Our art exhibitions rotate every two months, so there is enough time for regular visitors to keep up with the latest art on show. We strive to provide for a wide variety of tastes and wallets, while supporting our vibrant Magaliesburg artist community. Most of our exhibitions are group shows, that would often include paintings, drawings, ceramics, and sculpture. Our shows have occasionally included well known artists such as Charles Gotthard, Michael Heyns and Ronel Kellerman. Resident artist and gallerist, Sam Savage, offers regular mid-week art classes. “Sip and Paint” events, mosaic classes and creative workshops can be enjoyed by prior arrangement.

FABRICS AND HOME-WARE

Our fabric printing and home-ware section creates original designs and hand crafted products for the kitchen and home. We combine function with art by printing and sewing practical, yet decorative items, including tablecloths, scatter cushions, oven mitts and more. This beautiful venue allows visitors to escape the urban hustle and immerse themselves in a haven of flavour and creativity. What the Fig is easily accessible, conveniently located on the main Magaliesburg route. We are situated 2km North of Magaliesburg village on the R24 (Rustenburg Road), and we offer free parking. Whether you need a family outing or a lazy lunch with friends, What the Fig invites you to relax, savour a delicious meal, sip on a cold beer or cocktail, and explore the captivating art gallery. It's a destination where nature, art, and good food converge to create an unforgettable experience. Our opening hours are tailored to suit long, lazy days, from 10h00 until 18h00.

RESTAURANT

The menu at the What the Fig Restaurant is inspired by the rich flavours of the Middle East and Mediterranean. We also often feature fusion-inspired dishes that add an element of surprise to the dining experience. Our dishes are made from scratch with fresh local ingredients, and we can also adapt to most dietary requirements. Some of the best chicken liver Pate in Gauteng is created with (chief cook & bottle washer) Paula's secret family recipe! We are an off-grid venue, which means that we don't carry heavy electrical equipment. Coffee plungers instead of machines, no deep fryers, no microwaves, just really good food, made fresh and healthy. Birthday parties and private events can be arranged.

DRINKS

What the Fig is fully licensed. Our "Round the World Cocktail taster menu" invites guests to embark on a journey of taste exploration, from Honey, Nartjie and Rooibos in South Africa, to Lime, Lemongrass and Cucumber in East Asia. We have a carefully selected wine list, which offers a variety of South African wines and stock a few craft breweries as well as the usual SAB options. We support the responsible consumption of alcohol. Enjoy real Spanish cocoa, an aromatic coffee plunger, or a slow cup of Rooibos tea. As a family-run establishment, What the Fig prides itself on transferring skills and kitchen secrets from generation to generation, while encouraging a sense of community and mutual support. The outdoor area of the restaurant, with its giant steel sculpture in the garden and dining terrace, provides a chilled Bohemian atmosphere away from everyday stresses. Our commitment to outstanding service is evident from our welcoming and friendly staff who go the extra mile to ensure a memorable dining experience for every guest.

Whether you're a seasoned food enthusiast or an art aficionado, What the Fig promises an immersion into a world where creativity meets gastronomy.
